T\u00fcrk edebiyat\u0131n\u0131n yenile\u015fme tarihinde \u00f6nemli bir devreyi dolduran ve XIX. y\u00fczy\u0131l\u0131n son \u00e7eyre\u011finde ayd\u0131nl\u0131\u011f\u0131n geldi\u011fi bir ocak olan Ahmed Midhat Efendi\u2019nin, matbaa kurmas\u0131 ve i\u015fletmesi, her alanda say\u0131s\u0131z kitap ve risale ne\u015fretmesi ve Osmanl\u0131 toplumunu okumaya al\u0131\u015ft\u0131rmas\u0131 gibi b\u00fcy\u00fck emekleri d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcn\u00fcl\u00fcnce onun Osmanl\u0131 yaz\u0131 hayat\u0131n\u0131 i\u00e7eren bir kitab\u0131n \u00f6ns\u00f6z\u00fc olarak nitelendirilmesi hi\u00e7 de abart\u0131 olarak alg\u0131lanmaz. Fakir bir esnaf ailesinin \u00e7ocu\u011fu olarak d\u00fcnyaya gelen Ahmed Midhat Efendi, olduk\u00e7a g\u00fc\u00e7 \u015fartlar i\u00e7inde yeti\u015fmi\u015ftir. \u00c7ocuklu\u011fu mahrum bir ortamda ve olduk\u00e7a \u201cserazat\u201d ge\u00e7mi\u015f ve ailesinin ge\u00e7im zaruretinden dolay\u0131 M\u0131s\u0131r \u00c7ar\u015f\u0131s\u0131\u2019nda bir aktar d\u00fckk\u00e2n\u0131na bo\u011faz toklu\u011funa \u00e7\u0131rak olarak verilmi\u015ftir. Hem dostu hem de Rodos\u2019ta s\u00fcrg\u00fcn arkada\u015f\u0131 olan Ebuzziya Tevfik\u2019in ifade etti\u011fi gibi, hayata nas\u0131l \u00e7al\u0131\u015farak ba\u015flad\u0131ysa, \u00f6mr\u00fcn\u00fcn sonuna kadar bu yo\u011fun \u00e7al\u0131\u015fma temposundan hi\u00e7 \u00f6d\u00fcn vermeden ayn\u0131 \u015fekilde devam eden Ahmed Midhat Efendi\u2019ye tak\u0131lm\u0131\u015f lakaplardan ikisinin \u201cK\u0131rk Ambar\u201d ve \u201cK\u0131rk beygir kuvvetinde bir yaz\u0131 makinesi\u201d olmas\u0131 da tesad\u00fcf\u00ee de\u011fildir. Fel\u00e2tun Bey \u0130le R\u00e2k\u0131m Efendi roman\u0131 1875 y\u0131l\u0131nda yay\u0131nlan\u0131r. Roman\u0131n yay\u0131mland\u0131\u011f\u0131 y\u0131l, Tanzimat Ferman\u0131\u2019n\u0131n ilan edili\u015finin \u00fczerinden 36 sene ge\u00e7mi\u015ftir.Tanzimat Ferman\u0131\u2019n\u0131n ilan edilmesiyle birlikte, Bat\u0131l\u0131la\u015fman\u0131n bir devlet program\u0131 h\u00e2line gelmesi ve bu \u00e7er\u00e7evede devlete ait b\u00fct\u00fcn kurumlar\u0131n yenilenmeye ba\u015flamas\u0131, bu de\u011fi\u015fimin k\u0131sa bir s\u00fcrede g\u00fcndelik hayatta da kar\u015f\u0131l\u0131k bulmas\u0131na yol a\u00e7m\u0131\u015f; y\u00fczy\u0131llard\u0131r \u201c\u00f6teki\u201d olarak g\u00f6r\u00fclen Bat\u0131\u2019n\u0131n hayat bi\u00e7imi, giyim ku\u015fam\u0131, modalar\u0131, d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnce bi\u00e7imi, sosyal ve siyasi yap\u0131s\u0131, felsefesi, Osmanl\u0131 i\u00e7in kendisinden mutlaka yararlan\u0131lmas\u0131 gereken ve vazge\u00e7ilmesi m\u00fcmk\u00fcn olmayan \u00f6nemli de\u011ferler h\u00e2line gelmi\u015ftir. K\u0131sa s\u00fcrede toplumsal hayatta da kar\u015f\u0131l\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 bulan bu de\u011fi\u015fim iste\u011fi; bu hayata ait pek \u00e7ok unsurun, modernle\u015fme s\u00fcreci i\u00e7erisinde yeni d\u00f6nemin getirdi\u011fi d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcncelerle; yeniden konu\u015fulmas\u0131n\u0131, tart\u0131\u015f\u0131lmas\u0131n\u0131 ve bi\u00e7imlendirilmesini de sa\u011flam\u0131\u015ft\u0131r.
