Felsefeyi, din\u00ee d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcnceyi, ahlaki de\u011ferleri ve hayat\u0131 derinlemesine irdeleyen Tolstoy, bu eserini kaleme ald\u0131\u011f\u0131 d\u00f6nemde ayn\u0131 derinlikte ruhsal bir krizin i\u00e7inde bulunmaktad\u0131r.  Bu bunal\u0131mla birlikte kendi varl\u0131\u011f\u0131n\u0131 sorgular ve hayatla \u00f6l\u00fcm aras\u0131ndaki ili\u015fkiden bilimle din ger\u00e7ekli\u011fine do\u011fru tarafs\u0131z bir \u015fekilde yol al\u0131r.   \u0130lk olarak 1882\u2019de bir dergide yay\u0131mlanmak istenen \u0130tiraflar\u0131m, Do\u011fu Ortodoks Kilisesi taraf\u0131ndan sans\u00fcre u\u011fram\u0131\u015ft\u0131r.
